Who is missing from the arrival story?
The first RELOCALS sample invites a broader set of questions for Sicily too.
In its public update, NOMAG acknowledges a limitation of the first RELOCALS group ↗: 44.7% of 103 participants come from the United States or United Kingdom. This is a group reached through substantially English-speaking networks. It does not represent all international residents.
The editorial implication for Sicily is to stop using one relocation story to explain every other. Questions about inexpensive homes or international work can be useful, but do not exhaust the needs and obstacles of people arriving for family reunification, local employment or through family networks. This is a proposal for future reporting, without assigning figures or testimony to communities we have not interviewed.
Recruitment in several languages, accessible questions and an explicit account of excluded groups would help. Comparing respondents with another population also requires distinguishing citizenship from birthplace. This reading does not invalidate the research: it defines its uses. Matteo Cerri authors the volume within the NOMAG/ITS Italy ecosystem, with We the Italians; U Chianu discloses its editorial and commercial proximity instead of presenting the findings as independent verification.
