Orange Fiber: connecting Sicily’s citrus supply chain with textiles

The Catania business brings research, pilot plants and manufacturing partnerships into one development story.

Citrus processing leaves material that can have further uses. Orange Fiber built its business around extracting cellulose for textiles. Founded in Catania in 2014, it connects a supply chain closely associated with Sicily to a different market.

Its published timeline separates stages often compressed into a single innovation announcement. It records a first pilot plant in 2015 and a commercial collaboration with Ferragamo in 2017. A later partnership with Lenzing concerns lyocell combining orange-derived and wood-derived cellulose. Describing that fibre as made solely from citrus waste would therefore be inaccurate.

The interesting part is the work between an idea and a product. Extracting usable material, preparing it for subsequent processing and finding supply-chain partners are industrial as well as scientific challenges. Collaboration becomes part of the production model.

The story matters for Sicily because it explores another use for a locally significant raw material. It does not by itself prove a lower environmental impact for every product; that requires specific, comparable assessments. It does document a search for added value beyond food processing, with identifiable stages of experimentation and collaboration. Those stages provide a serious basis for assessing an innovation story.
