Geotrans: workers’ recovery becomes a logistics business

CFI’s account of the Catania cooperative connects a legal recovery with the practical work of running transport services.

Returning a business to legality is decisive. Keeping it operating afterwards requires customers, vehicles, organisation and responsibility. The Geotrans cooperative in Catania allows those two dimensions to be considered together.

CFI, the institutional investor supporting cooperatives, published an interview with chairman Maurizio Faro on 12 February 2026. It describes a cooperative established in 2022 by thirteen worker-members as part of the reuse of a previously confiscated business. The previous ownership’s history must be distinguished from the cooperative formed by its workers.

Faro describes transport and distribution through depots in Catania and Palermo. He also reports investment in refrigerated and frozen-goods facilities in 2025 with CFI support. These are statements attributed to the chairman, rather than financial results independently certified by this newspaper.

The industrial substance is tangible: maintaining work also means storing goods, tracing deliveries and organising connections. Logistics supports many other activities in Sicily’s economy. The experience therefore matters beyond its symbolism. It is also an attempt to turn recovery into an operating business, run by people sharing the risks and responsibilities of decisions. Announced employment growth remains a goal to assess over time.
